ZombieBooth 4.41

Who's the zombie of them all?

Since smartphones now come with better than ever hardware, they have opened the way for everybody to fool around with photos. The market is filled with hundreds of apps that distort faces in various ways, only to create more bloat content for posting on social media. But I suppose that posting a zombified photo of yourself will attract more views than merely featuring your breakfast every morning on Instagram. As you might have guessed, Zombiebooth is one of these face warping apps.

The reason you might want to check out Zombiebooth is that there is no Zombiebooth 2. You'll see what I mean when you tap on the advertisement inside. In any case, Zombiebooth features a very good looking polygonal mesh, which adapts almost entirely around the face picture that you feed to it (this pun came naturally). The only things you need to worry about is to provide a clear, forward-looking headshot, and then snap the eyes and mouth in the right positions so that the 3D mesh can do its job.

Once you've zombified your mug, you can add in combinations of head regalia, eyes, and mouths. Some are free, but most of them cost points, which you can purchase if you absolutely feel the need to see them worn. Personally, with a few exceptions, I found most of them to be unfitting anyway.

You can also play around with the 3D model. Tapping or sliding a finger over the screen will entice the zombie-head to attempt to bite it, producing a little bit of animated blood. You can take snapshots, and even record these interactions. Although the model looks just fine, I can't say I'm impressed with the way in which the head moves. It is jerky and uninspired. It almost feels like its trying to emulate the Parkinsons disease.

Also, the movie record function seems to crash the app everytime you use it. I recommend you set a way to quickly close running apps, as Zombiebooth could force a hangup on your entire system.

Features

  • Transforms a face into a 3D model
  • You can mix and match "decorations"
  • Interactive biting head
  • Save screenshots
  • Save video recordings (buggy)
  • Ghost sequel

Final Thoughts

ZombieBooth looks like a regular app that's made to capitalize on the zombie/ugly face morphing tendency of very bored individuals. There are no intrusive ads to speak of, which is excellent, but the overall performance is lacking, unfortunately. However, it's perfectly fine for capturing a couple of snapshots and then remove it from your system.
